Is there an easy way to determine how much binding strip I will need in advance for my quilt?
Your binding measurement is simply the distance around the quilt plus some added measure for allowing turned corners and joined ends. Generally, a safe allowance is 10". For example, if your quilt is 63" x 72":
Side lengths are 270 = (63 + 63 + 72 + 72) + 10 for allowance.
You should have a total of 280 inches of binding strip. How many yards is that? We anticipated this question with our yardage chart. You will need 3/8 yard for 1-1/2" width or 1/2 yard for 2-1/2" width of binding and cut into seven strips for joining and attaching. (*Based on 40" width of fabric).
Binding Length | *No. of Strips | Amount for 1-1/2" width | Amount for 2-1/2 width |
160" | 4 | 1/4 yard | 3/8 yard |
200" | 5 | 1/4 yard | 3/8 yard |
240" | 6 | 1/4 yard | 1/2 yard |
280" | 7 | 3/8 yard | 1/2 yard |
320" | 8 | 3/8 yard | 5/8 yard |
360" | 9 | 3/8 yard | 5/8 yard |
